District 25 Food Services Update Wednesday, August 26th was the final day of open food distribution for the summer. However, beginning Wednesday, September 9th food distribution will continue for all Arlington Heights residents with children 18 and under! Details are here. Letter From Mrs. Donahue Hello Parents! As our students and families continue to deal with the challenges of pandemic closures and ever-changing plans, I would like to offer support during the transition “back to school.” In case you haven’t gotten a chance to meet me, I’m the social worker at Patton. I am here full time to support the children and families at Patton School. Given that many families are on stress-overload, and students do not currently have an option to approach social workers directly, we have attached:
Of course, if you’d like to speak with me about any specific concerns, you are encouraged to reach out to me at the number/email listed below. Wishing you all the best and looking forward to the time we can connect with each other in person! Sincerely, Barb Donahue, Patton School Social Worker [email protected] Direct phone line: 847-506-6999 x5927 Tech Tips for Students and Parents Please try to minimize any disruptions while your child is on Zoom with a teacher. During this time it is essential for each teacher’s attention to be solely on his or her students. Interruptions impact all students in the class. So please, to the best of your ability, provide your student with quiet surroundings during Zoom classes, and email your teacher with any questions or clarifications you may need. Thank you for your help during the remote learning process! Our Tech Department recommends that all students power down Chromebooks at least once a day and maybe at lunchtime as well. That will help the "glitchiness" many are experiencing. Ipads should also be rebooted occasionally to prevent connectivity issues (Press and hold the On/Off/Sleep button at the upper-right corner of the iPad. Slide the bar to power off).

Reboot to Refresh! Video conferencing takes a tremendous amount of resources for computers. Our District Tech department recommends that you encourage your children to restart their devices at least once a day, during an off period or each morning/evening. This helps to reset the computer usage and make it available for the next set of tasks. You can also improve performance by limiting the amount of tabs and windows open at the same time as they are constantly reloading in the background. These steps can help reset and hopefully improve the experience each day. Chromebooks To turn off your Chromebook completely, try one of these options:
To Power Down Your iPad press and hold the On/Off/Sleep button at the upper-right corner of the iPad. Slide the bar to Power off. Absences and Appointments
There are two ways to let us know your child will miss part or all of a school day:
Meet the Teacher Our teachers are very excited to have the opportunity to connect with the students and families via Zoom on Monday. Please be sure to reference the email from your classroom teacher for the Zoom link. When you log into the teacher’s Zoom meeting, you will likely be placed into a waiting room. Please try to be a few minutes early logging in, and the teacher will let you in at your time. Many teachers have back to back meetings throughout the entire morning, so it is important that everyone is on time. We hope you enjoy this special one on one session with the teachers as we head into our first day of school In The Beginning... A typical school year is launched with a gradual release of responsibility for students in all curricular areas that extends into the first several weeks of school as routines and procedures are being built and understood. Along with routines and procedures teachers work with their classes to build strong classroom communities, which are critical to student success. You are going to see that typical launch of a school year during the first weeks of school, but it will be adjusted for our remote environment. You will be given a schedule everyday, and you can still expect to see your children online with their teacher(s) for at least 2.5 hours (first through fifth grade) a day doing synchronous (live) activities and offline doing asynchronous (on demand) activities for the remainder of the school day. Please know that your children will be involved in these launching activities early on. We have been so appreciative of the kind words and support that has been given to us. We appreciate your flexibility as we navigate our remote environment together. We believe that while the year does look different, great things can and will occur this year! Supplies Sent Home - A Message From Our Tech Facilitator Please do not throw away the brown envelopes that went home with your student devices. The label on them contains your student's Google Username and Password. This is especially important for 3rd - 5th grade students. Students will need this to log into the Chromebook. Once signed into the Chromebook, they will use the single QR code to log into Clever which will have all the other apps they will need. The sheet with the multiple QR codes has directions on how to log into Clever. To clarify, the sheet of QR codes sent home with the iPad will lead to videos explaining the device and how to use the apps. The single QR code is the Clever Badge. Students will go to the Clever app and click the QR code option and scan your student's individual badge. Once in Clever, your students will be able to select on any of the apps without needing different usernames and passwords for all the apps. Thank you PTA! A special thank you goes out to the PTA for supporting and helping us with everything related to supply pick up. To putting dice and counters in bags, labels on calculators, stuffing envelopes, loading bags, and loading actual cars. This gift of time allowed for staff to have additional time to plan and prepare for the first day of school and remote learning. We are truly grateful for the wonderful partnership the school has with the PTA. "Repeat Information"Reverse Parade - 9/1/20, 8:15 am
One of the things we always enjoy about the first day of school is getting kids excited about school with an opening day assembly. Since we are fully remote, we plan to kick off the school year with a reverse parade, just as we did in the spring. We will be able to safely hold the parade and get school started on time. The directions below are similar to what was shared with families in the spring. We ask that you read and adhere to these instructions. SAFETY
DIRECTIONS
Teachers will be stationed along the sidewalk of the main drive, socially distanced from each other and your vehicles. We ask for your patience as cars are moving through the drive, and follow the above timeline to the best of your ability. Again, please make sure that everyone stays in the vehicle. We are really looking forward to seeing so many of you in person! Supply Pick Up: Friday August 28, 2020 Supply Pick will be hosted on Friday, August 28, 2020. We have organized our pick up by last name to streamline the process to the greatest extent possible. If you are unable to come during your assigned time, please reach out to me ([email protected]) and we will coordinate a time for you to get your supplies. Please see the video below for detailed directions for our pick up process, and THANK YOU for your flexibility and understanding throughout this time! It is very much appreciated!
Meet the Teacher Every student/family will have an opportunity to meet the teacher virtually on Monday, August 31. Please be on the lookout for an email coming on Tuesday afternoon/evening with the links to sign up. Each time slot is ten minutes, and families are to only sign up for one slot for their child’s teacher. The time slots will range from 8:10 am - 12:10 pm on Monday, August 31. This will provide everyone with a great opportunity to safely meet their classroom teacher. The teachers are very much looking forward to connecting with their students! In addition to new staff, we have a few teachers who have changed grade levels. 2nd Grade: Mrs. Stanton (previously 1st grade) 3rd Grade: Mrs. Johnson (previously 2nd grade) 3rd Grade: Mrs. Levin (new teacher) Teaching Assistants: Beth Hartig, Summer Sander, and Anna Toczycki Calendar If you follow this link, it will take you to an updated District 25 calendar that highlights all of the updates to the school year. Daily Schedule: Our goal is to create an engaging and enriching day for each of our students. Students will be following their daily schedule with a mix of synchronous and asynchronous teaching/learning activities. All K-5 teachers will use Seesaw as their primary launch point for digital learning management, while Zoom will continue to be our primary video conferencing tool. This will create a consistent starting point for all our students. Teachers may use additional digital learning tools to enhance and extend their lessons. Typically, students will start off each subject area with synchronous instruction that will range from 15-30 minutes. Then students will transition into small groups or independent practice which will be a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous experiences for the remainder of the subject. Below you will find a sample schedule to help visualize the flow of a typical day. Your child’s teacher will share their specific class schedule at the beginning of the school year. They will also help students set up home routines and schedules as well as establish and practice norms of remote instruction and participation. Below are two sample schedules. (Each grade level will have different timing, and there will also be a schedule for PM kindergarten.)
Panther Activity Day - June 3rd

Even though this isn't our normal Panther Activity Day, I sincerely hope that the activities below will create lifelong memories with you and your family members to cherish. If you choose to take pictures or videos of you and your family performing the challenges please feel free to send them to my email address ([email protected]) and tweet them to your friends! It's almost time to celebrate summer! As fun as summer is, I'm sure we have in the back of our minds "What about next year?" We have no answers to that question yet, but it doesn't hurt to gather information to help us prepare. The article below, written by clinical psychologist Dr. Tara Quinlivan, gives some strategies for parents and teachers about the hopeful return to school. DIRECTIONS: *PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY*
Hi Patton Families!
Welcome to our ONE BOOK, ONE REMOTE SCHOOL! We are excited to bring our community together in the shared adventure of A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold. Although for this event we will be reading an Ebook with our remote school, many other enjoyable aspects of a shared read are the same as our previous One Book, One School events.
Read/listen to the weekly chapters any time or day(s) during the week that work best for you. The chapters are short and the story is engaging, authentic and features a baby animal! Most importantly this year, let's really try to connect with each other by sharing photos and videos of families reading together and your responses to and ideas about the book using an easy Flipgrid link also on the LMC page. As you know, reading the same book as your student is a special chance to enhance your student’s reading experience, model a love of reading, and share the adventure of good literature. This year especially we hope the few minutes of reading together will provide a welcome respite from a hectic time in our lives. Sincerely, Ms. Melamed, Mr. Larson, and Mrs. Vignocchi

Here you will find a link to the form you can fill out should you like to provide the school with any information you feel would be important as we consider placement for your child for the next school year. Please know that the placement process for all Patton students is extensive and well thought out. To that end, it is important to understand that requests for a specific teacher will not be considered, as allowing parents to request teachers puts a significant strain on an already extensive process. All staff members are committed to providing the best education for your children. This form is to be completed by Friday, May 8, 2020.
