Reading Aloud With Your Children, by Nicole Brown, Patton Literacy Teacher Tweets of the Week
Hello Patton Community, I hope everyone had a wonderful week. This week we hosted our first Family Hour of Code on Thursday night and the turnout was truly fantastic. We genuinely hope everyone enjoyed it and found value in the experience. There were many highlights for me that evening, but if I had to pick just one it was watching the students teach their parents about the different coding activities. It is so great to see families spend time together, enjoy one another's company, and learn together. Below is a tweet from Mrs. Corley, our technology facilitator, and if you watch the video, you will get a taste of last night's activities. Parent Academy - Primary We have added a few videos to our parent academy page. These video are designed give you some suggestions, tools, or ideas for supporting your kids at home. You can either click here or on the Parent Academy link at the top of the page. PTA Updates Just a friendly reminder that the PTA now has their own page on this site. You can view their updates by clicking here or clicking on PTA at the top of the page. 5 Essentials Survey Everyone should have received an email from the district about the 5Essentials Survey. Tweets of the Week
Hello Patton Community, We had a great full week back at Patton. As a reminder, next week there is no school for students on Monday or Tuesday and we will resume on Wednesday. There are a handful of important updates listed below. Please be sure to read through them and as always, let us know if you have any questions. New Lunch Procedures Beginning on Wednesday, we are going to slightly change our lunch hour. Currently, our lunch hour features 3 20 minute rotations where students eat lunch for 20 minutes and then go outside for recess for 40 minutes. Starting next week, our lunch hour will contain two rotation of 30 minutes. In order to accommodate this new schedule, it was necessary to split third grade. We recognize that lunch is a time when students are able to see friends from other classrooms and dividing third grade impacts that. To that end, we will have a rotating schedule for third grade throughout the year so all sections of third grade will have lunch together at different points in time. Valentines Cards If your child is passing Valentines cards out to other students, the cards cannot have any candy or food item attached to them. Trinkets such as pencils, erasers, stickers, etc., are fine as long as they are not edible. Family Hour of Code Just a reminder that we will be hosting our Family Night of Code on January 22, at 6:30pm. If you have already signed up to come we are looking forward to seeing you. If you would still like to sign up, you can do so by clicking here. Upgrade to Online Food Service Payment System Beginning January 21st, any deposit made to a student's lunch account by 10:00 am will be available for use on that same day. Payments after that time will be available the next day. This upgrade will not change how payments are made online. If you do not have an account you may sign up here to deposit money, monitor balances, and view purchases.

Hello Patton Community, Now that the winter weather is upon us, I wanted to pass on some information to help you and your children plan for your days. We often get asked if students will be going outside for recess each day, because parents want to know if their children should wear boots and snowpants. Determinations are made during the day based on the current weather. If the temperature (factoring in wind chill) is above zero, we will go outside. Sites that we use to track weather throughout the day are www.weather.gov and www.weather.com. We often make decisions about going outside in real-time, so if the weather looks like it is on the border of going outside or not going outside, it is best to plan for going outside. With regard to school closings, decisions about closing school for a superintendent is never an easy decision, and like recess, is sometimes made in real time as well, depending on the forecast. When school is closed, the district will send out a message to all parents. Be sure to check other outlets if you are unsure about a school closing, such as the district website, as well as www.emergencyclosingcenter.com, prior to calling the school. Stay warm, Eric Hello Patton Community, As you may well know, the current outdoor sign for Patton is around 20 years old and in need of replacing. Outdoor signage has changed a lot over the years and a more progressive approach would be to have a digital LED sign. One of the benefits of having this type of sign is that we would not be limited to just four lines of text at a time. We would be able to push out more information so when you are walking or driving by, you would be able to see all that is happening at Patton. Additionally, with this sign, we can control it remotely as well as set timers so the display is not running late into the evening. In order to be compliant with the Village of Arlington Heights, we have applied for a variance. In the next week or so you will see a sign out in front of the school indicating that there will be a variance meeting to discuss the sign. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Have a wonderful day, Eric Larson | Principal, Patton Elementary School The flyer posted below was distributed to the homes who directly face the sign. |
