PTA Committee Highlight - Yearbook Each year the Patton PTA creates a yearbook for purchase to allow the students to keep their memories in a time capsule. The Yearbook Chairperson needs to be organized and creative (well, at least somewhat). Nearly 600 candid pictures are needed to complete the yearbook, therefore the Chairperson relies heavily on everyone at Patton to provide pictures throughout the year. The software used to create the yearbook is easy to use and is intuitive to anyone who creates the yearbook. Creating the yearbook does require some time to do it right, but it is enjoyable in many ways to put together and see the end result. In addition, the Yearbook Chairperson is responsible for all the school picture days, especially since half the yearbook is class composite photos. The other picture days are Club/5th grade graduation photo day as well as Spring photo day where full class pictures are taken outside. At the end of next school year, we will be looking for someone to shadow the current Yearbook Chairperson during the 17-18 school year to then take over for the 18-19 school year. If you are interested in this position, please email [email protected] to let us know. PTA Committee Highlight - Directory Each year the Patton PTA provides its members with a student directory to help families remain in contact with each other during the year. 2015-16 was the final year for the official printed directory, with future releases being made through our online app Directory Spot. App users may choose to export or print the directory data at home if they desire a hard copy. The Directory Committee collects family data from the Patton front office as soon as students’ teacher assignments have been announced (late August). This data must then be formatted for upload to the app. Therefore the Chairperson should be technically savvy and have good working knowledge of spreadsheets and data manipulation. Periodically throughout the year the Chairperson will collect updates to family data and make changes to the app database. If you are interested in this position, please email [email protected] to let us know. 5th Annual Just Move it! Challenge Pre-Registration Deadline Thursday, March 31st! PTA Committee Highlight - Running & Fitness Club The Patton Running and Fitness Club has been a highlight for 4th and 5th grade students at Patton for many years. This club is truly a committee headed by teacher and parent. The club meets weekly in the fall and spring for calisthenics followed by laps outdoors around the school and the block. During colder months, the club moves indoors for other organized activities, such as yoga, step, and guided aerobic exercises. Mrs. Goumas rallies the kids to join, arranges for guest participants, and always participates in the activities. The committee chair(s) send informational emails to parents and collect permission slips. Additional volunteer parents join in to assist in supervision, lap counting, and general guidance for participating students. Currently the PTA is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer parent to shadow Bonnie Alcaro, our current chair, with plans to take over in 2017-18. If that sounds great, or if you’d like to be contacted about volunteering during meetings, please send an email to [email protected]. Patton Elementary School Parents Facebook page Do you have news you’d like to spread to other Patton families? Are you having a garage sale, or do you have questions about the goings-on at school? The Patton Elementary School Parents Facebook page is a great place to post items like this. This is a non-PTA page, and it can be used for things that fall outside of the scope of the Patton PTA. It is a closed group, but if you’re a Patton family just ask and you can be added. Join the conversation, and get your message out directly to the Patton community. 5th Annual Just Move it! Have you been interested in adding your name to the growing list of people interested in volunteering at PTA events? And remember, this link is available at the bottom of every PTA Post and PTA email. Spring Thought - PTA Walking School Bus Committee Forming Walking to school offers students and families exercise, fresh air, and the great feeling of being outdoors. Now that spring is on the way, the Patton PTA is forming a committee to promote National Walk To School Day (October 5th, 2016), Walking Wednesdays, and to investigate the possibility of reviving the “Walking School Bus”. This is a brand new group which will require a committee chairperson and several people to help start a program from scratch. If you understand the value of living so close to our school, consider emailing [email protected] to let us know you’d like to help bring this concept to life! Introducing A New PTA Post Feature - The Weekly PTA Committee Highlight Patton PTA committees offer many diverse programs and activities to the students at Patton School. There are so many, in fact, that it’s hard for new Patton families to get a handle on them all. To help, we will be highlighting one distinct committee in each week’s Post to offer insight as to what these committees do and what volunteer opportunities exist. Take a look - there may be something that interests you! PTA Committee Highlight - Volunteer Coordination Committee The Patton PTA is run completely by parent volunteers, people who must be made aware of the positions and opportunities available. Our Volunteer Coordinator addresses this issue using Google Forms to collect names of parents interested in specific jobs. The Coordinator will periodically send out a link to the Google Volunteer Form which includes all PTA activities and positions available, allowing parents to pick the events in which they are interested. Parent responses are captured in a spreadsheet so that the names of potential volunteers may be forwarded to the appropriate event coordinators. Additionally, the Volunteer Coordinator may choose to send out event-specific requests during the year. A Volunteer Coordinator should be organized and have a sense of scheduling so they may recruit helpers in a timely manner before events. This critical committee has traditionally been run by a single chairperson, but it can be handled by more than one person if there is interest. If you are interested in becoming involved as a Volunteer Coordinator, please send an email to [email protected]. Arlington Heights Council of PTAs Scholarship Program Do you know a high school senior who attended elementary school in District 25? Then you should know about the Arlington Heights Council of PTAs Scholarship program, which offers college or other post-secondary academic scholarships to graduating seniors. Since its inception in 1973, the program has awarded more than $364,000 in scholarships. To be considered for this achievement scholarship, a graduating high school senior must:
