Students entering K - 5 next school year: We want to CATCH YOU READING this summer! Take a photo of you reading at home, pool, beach, car trip, grandparents, a ball game, camping...wherever summer and reading takes you! Be sure to include your first name, location & the photo; THEN tweet: @pattonlmc or email: [email protected] and follow @pattonlmc on Twitter and the LMC Blog page all summer to see where students are reading and watch for your picture on the walls of Patton School next year! And earn a Summer Reading Tag too! Prevent Summer Reading Loss Reading skill losses over the summer are cumulative, creating a wider gap each year in a student's reading proficiency. By the time a struggling reader reaches middle school, the child can be lagging by two years or more. Literacy expert Julie Wood says "As parents, one of our major roles is to make sure that children set aside time every day to read." Just 4 to 6 books over the summer are all it takes. It is important to let children choose books that interest them (and are appropriate), and the 4-6 book total includes books parents read to their children. For details, and tips to get those books read this summer, you may read an article by Ms. Wood here.
