Hello Patton Community,
I hope you had a wonderful week. Patton has been buzzing with all sorts of learning activities this week. I hope you have able to follow along with us a little bit on social media. This week marks the end of our fall assessments. The data that is generated helps guide our instruction, form groups, and provides us with information so we can be supporting all of our students. On October 9 we have our School Improvement Day, and throughout the morning the teachers will spend a significant amount of time reviewing the data that has been collected. Below you will find some updates, information, and tweets of the week. I hope you have an enjoyable weekend with your family. Sincerely, Eric Larson CLUBS & ACTIVITIES
This week I had the pleasure of meeting with some students to talk about two clubs that they wanted to start. One was a Yoga club, and another was a paper airplane club. The best part about both of these clubs is that they were totally driven by the students and their interests/desires. The goal is to include as many students as possible from a variety of grade levels. More information to come, but I love how students are willing to work together, advocate for their interests, and share their talents with others. Stay tuned for more information on the clubs listed above. Below you will find an image of club offerings at Patton that are set for this year. (Miss Donovan is working on a club opportunity for our primary friends, and we will release more information after the planning is complete.) As new clubs arise, we will keep you informed.

PTA DIRECTORY INFORMATION
From the PTA: The 2015-16 Patton PTA Directory booklet is going to be delivered this week, and parents should be aware that the data in that booklet is to be used only for personal communications between students, families, and staff. We have already had two instances this year where data from past Patton Directories has been used for business purposes. The existence of our Directory hinges on our non-business policy, since the PTA is forbidden in our by-laws from advertising or otherwise promoting businesses or other groups. We’d like to keep a Directory available in the future, so please use the information within it properly. It’s a valuable book - please help keep us from needing to eliminate it.
FLYERS/LINKS
In the update the PTA emailed out, they reinforced that the information within the PTA directory is for personal communications between students, families, and staff. It is not to be used for business purposes or advertise for a group or organization. It should be used responsibly and for it's intended purposes only. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your PTA presidents or myself.
Smart Snacks
District 25's Smart Snack program offers a variety of whole grain, baked, fruit, veggie, and dairy-rich products that are under 200 calories. Prices range from 25 cents to one dollar. Students who have returned a signed permission slip can purchase these items with the same MealTime account used for hot and zip line lunches. For more information click here. To print out a permission slip, scroll down to the bottom of this page. TWEETS OF THE WEEK
Hello Patton Community,
I hope the first half of your weekend has been great. I just have a few pieces of information for you. I really want to highlight the Food Allergy component listed below. The video below is powerful and Patton is in full support of the District's goal to provide further education to parents and students. Looking forward to a great week ahead, Eric
Food Allergy Information
If you were at Curriculum Night, you may recall Dr. Bein shared out how she has a Food Allergy Education Committee that is comprised of parents, staff, and students. The goal is to further educate our students and parents on food allergies. If you are like me, food allergies were not prevalent when I was going through school. It wasn't until my fifth year of teaching that I encountered my first student with life threatening food allergies. That first encounter was the beginning of my educational journey into this newer diagnosis. The video below provides some perspective from real parents and children on having food allergies. It is 7 minutes long, but definitely worth watching all the way to the end. This clip was put together by FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education), an organization who strives to provide funding for research and education for food allergy awareness.
Patton Families Helped Plant over 800 Trees!
If you bought a Patton yearbook last year, our yearbook partner planted a tree! TreeRing is a certified "Green Business" that uses recycled papers, composts, and has planted more than 700,000 trees. Last year, the yearbooks purchased by Patton families resulted in 818 new trees being planted.

When you have glimpses into what our students are doing, it is easier to spark up conversation with your children about their day.

SPARK
HELP WANTED! We are looking for volunteers to share their hobbies, careers, or interests with our 3rd-5th graders! These students will be working on Personalized Learning experiences this year. During these experiences, students select their own topics, formulate questions, and develop plans to guide their explorations. We are hoping to SPARK new interests by having community members share their passions! 5 minutes. 20 slides. 1 passion. What would you say? Our event, called SP*RK, is modeled after IgniteChicago. We are looking for volunteers to share their experiences in a short 5 minute presentation! Please click here for an example or watch the clip below! SP*RK will take place on Monday, October 5th from 2-3pm, but we need your help! If you have any questions or would be willing to present to our 3rd-5th graders, please contact Kristin Maksymec ([email protected])for more details. You do not need to be a polished presenter in order to do this. The kids will love seeing you present about something you are passionate about. Thank you!

Hello Patton Community,
This week flew by! I hope your children have enjoyed school this week and have had great stories to tell you when they come home. We have a bunch of updates for you. Please read through each of them, and as always, let us know if you have any questions. I hope you have a wonderful three day weekend with your families. Sincerely, Eric Larson UPDATES & INFORMATION
TRAFFIC FLOW
I've said this before, but I have to say it again, Patton is blessed with the best traffic volunteers. In fact, it is well known throughout the district that Patton has an amazing traffic team and another school has solicited our help to streamline their traffic practices. Patience and grace are always needed though because no system is perfect. Please model the Patton Way for your children, and know that "Thank You's" go a long way. We have been using a simple statement with our students when it comes to recess and PE, which could easily be applied to pick up and drop off. "Be kind, be safe, and follow directions." For those who may be new or have questions, below you will find information specific to our traffic patterns. Our goal is to dismiss students efficiently, but safety will always be our number one priority.
CLASSROOM SNACKS
This is a friendly reminder that the Patton snack rule consists of fruits or vegetables. I love going into classrooms during snack time when someone has an orange or tangerine. (It smells so good!) If your child is having a snack, please keep this rule in mind.
APPOINTMENTS WITH PATTON STAFF
Teachers always want to make time to meet with parents who wish to discuss their child. However, it is important to remember that the end of the school day can be a very busy time with after-school activities and meetings. Please do not come to the office at the end of the day to meet a teacher unannounced, but instead email or call your child's teacher to schedule a time that works for you both. Our staff is committed to working with you and your children throughout the year. If it's Not Nailed Down, Label It To help us return way-laid lunch boxes, hats, coats (or whatever your child brings from home) please clearly label any and all personal items with your child's name. CLOTHING FOR NURSES' OFFICE If you have gently used children's clothing please consider donating it to the Patton Nurses' Office to be used for spills and messes that can happen during the school day. There is a particular need for smaller sizes, but shirts and pants for boys and girls for kindergarten through 5th would be welcome. Also needed are new packages of underwear and socks. If you have an item you wish to donate, you can simply send it in with your child or drop it at the front office. Thanks as always for your generosity! TWEETS OF THE WEEK
